"Rimless" (in Italian senza brida) is now the standard for new toilets, and with good reason. If you are choosing a new WC, here is what it means, why it is more hygienic, and what to check before you buy.
A traditional toilet has a hollow rim (the brida) running around the top of the bowl. Water from the cistern enters that channel and runs out through small holes to rinse the bowl. The problem: the inside of the rim is almost impossible to reach with a brush, so limescale, bacteria and stains build up where you cannot see them.
A rimless toilet removes that channel. The top edge of the bowl is smooth and open, and the flush is directed by the shape of the ceramic itself, so the water sweeps the whole bowl without a hidden rim.
Early rimless models sometimes splashed, because there was no rim to guide the water. Modern designs have solved this with carefully shaped bowls and flush deflectors, so with a well-made ceramic and a correctly adjusted cistern, splashing is not an issue. If you notice splashing on an existing rimless WC, the flush volume may be set too high: ask your installer to adjust the cistern.
Alice Ceramica designs its WCs as rimless across its design collections. Alice is a manufacturer in the ceramic district of Civita Castellana, north of Rome, where most Italian sanitaryware has been made for generations. Its rimless WCs are available in both wall-hung and floor-standing versions, with a traslato (offset-outlet) version for some floor models that need to connect to an existing drain in an awkward position.
Most are available in classic glossy white, 16 matt colours, glossy colours and two-tone finishes. Browse all WCs.
A soft brush and a mild detergent are all you need day to day. For limescale, see our guide on how to clean a toilet and remove limescale.
